The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
